The dam is a symptom
Heat leaks into the attic, the underside of the roof deck stays warm, snow melts, water runs to the cold eave, and it freezes. That ridge of ice is the dam. Water backs up under the shingles and into the fascia and the rooms below. A bigger gutter will not fix a warm roof.
We look at baffles, intake at the soffit, ridge exhaust, and insulation at the attic floor before we sell you more product. Ice-and-water shield at the eaves and in the valleys is standard on every roof we put our name on in this climate.
When a repair is enough
A local leak at a valley or a boot is not always a new roof. If the shingles have life and the attic can be vented, we quote the repair. If the deck is wet in three rooms and the three-tabs are through, replacement is the cheaper ten-year answer. We write that from the attic, not from the driveway.
